The Biggest Losers

Last nights season finale of the Biggest Loser was, to say the least, amazing. That girl Poppi made me do a triple take. Erik was a completely different person and Brian, well, he's about to border into manorexia land (I thought he was hot as a fat man by the way). It was the best two hours I've had in a while. And, of course, (and this happens after every episode of the Biggest Loser), it made me want to go to the gym and start sweating. Will I? Probably not. Though, I like to think that I will one day.

Lindsey and I talk about the Biggest Loser often and we also talk about auditioning for the show. And, the reason we don't is very simple...we know we'd have an excellent chance of making it on the show. As many of you state in the comments section...those who aren't too busy making other's feel badly that is...we'd be awesome on the Biggest Loser. And, we would. We're funny, charismatic... I know that I could throw down some of the biggest excuses in Biggest Loser history to good old Bob the Trainer.

I also want to be pushed like that. I want to have nothing to do all day except train and count calories. I would love to focus 100% of my energy into changing my life. But, it's not practical for us at the moment life and job wise. And, well, there's that whole part about being on National TV.

I got to give it to the contestants for exposing themselves the way they do. I do not know how they gather the courage to look like fat pigs on television. Ever notice how at the beginning of the show the women have to wear sports bra tops exposing their huge bellies. Then, at the end of the show when they're skinny they can cover it all up? I don't need John Smith from high school seeing me at that state, even if I get hot looking at the end.

I know, it's all stupid, BS excuses I'm throwing out at you. Pretty pathetic. But, the truth is, we don't have the guts to do...no pun intended.

So, I ask all of you...our readers...send letters to NBC and The Biggest Loser and have them contact us.

MAKE US HAVE THE GUTS! (The good kind!)

See Fatties, the real reason why you'll never make it to The Biggest Loser is that to get on the show you not only have to be fat, charismatic, funny and good-looking, you also must REALLY, REALLY want to lose weight. The very premise of this blog is - in your own words - that you "don't do anything productive to not be as fat ... for we are also lazy." Somehow, I can't see you giving up your laziness and bingeing long enough to make it on the program, let alone the final.

The very fact that you are asking your loyal readers to petition for you, rather than making an audition tape like everyone else who wants to be on the program, tells me you're not serious. No one else can "make you have the guts" - the guts (so to speak) must come from within.

Yep, if you REALLY, REALLY wanted to lose weight, you would have done something about it by now.

Troll Avove: Why the hell are you on this blog!!!! SERIOUSLY...this is getting annoying.

I do believe they want to lose weight...I know they want it...we, for the most part...all do!

Anonymous said...

anonymous - OK, maybe the McGees do want to lose weight, but something tells me they don't want to put in the effort. Asking other people to "give you the guts" is a dead giveaway.

Like I said, if they wanted to be on TBL, they'd be making an audition tape already (like thousands of other people).

I do believe they want to lose weight...I know they want it...we, for the most part...all do!

So if the McGees want to lose weight why do they write all the time about overeating and not exercising?

And if(for the most part) you "all" want to lose weight, how come every time someone comes along and posts some sensible diet advice, you "all" hurl insults at them, accuse them of being bulimic/anorexic, tell them to piss off etc?

Really - I'd like to know.

Anonymous said...

Really - I'd like to know.

Because the ubiquitous trolls have proven time and time again that you don't "really" want to know, because we've told you over and over again that:

(1) we've heard your "sensible diet advice" pretty much every day of our lives (often multiple times). It's like constantly being stung by wasps. We've heard it enough and don't need to hear it yet again.

(2) in spite of all your theories on "thermodynamics," human metabolism isn't simple. "Eat sensibly and exercise an hour a day" just doesn't work for some of us.

To quote Absolutely Fabulous's Eddy "Sweetie darling, if it were that easy, everybody would be doing it."

Here's a thought: Instead of ignoring the advice, why not actually listen to - or, better still, act on - it?

(2) in spite of all your theories on "thermodynamics," human metabolism isn't simple. "Eat sensibly and exercise an hour a day" just doesn't work for some of us.

Actually, the "theory" about human thermodynamics/metabolism isn't a theory - it's proven fact. Unless of course the person has some medical problem preventing them from losing weight, but somehow I suspect that the vast majority of fatties who post here don't fall into that category.

To quote Absolutely Fabulous's Eddy "Sweetie darling, if it were that easy, everybody would be doing it."

I never said it would be easy, just that it's possible.

So, I'm guessing, not too many people pay attention to you IRL, Marla?

Are you stupid or mentally ill?

Because the definition of insane is repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results---What exactly do you want on this blog? For people to have some magical revelation all thanks to SWEET OLD YOU? Because no one's smart enough to give advice like you do!

Why, exaclty, do you get pissed when people don't react kindly to your dumb-girl rant? What were you expecting, for God's sake?

Here's a thought: Instead of ignoring the advice, why not actually listen to - or, better still, act on - it?

Go read a book that's not about dieting.

Listen closely, Marla. This, in a nutshell, is why "every time someone comes along and posts some sensible diet advice, [we] 'all' hurl insults at them, accuse them of being bulimic/anorexic, tell them to piss off etc[.]"

WE HAVE ACTED ON IT!!!!! IT DIDN'T WORK FOR US. WE'RE NOT DELUSIONAL, OR IN DENIAL, OR LYING, OR STUPID. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT DOESN'T MAKE IT NOT TRUE FOR US.

As for the thermodynamics of metabolism, I defy you to provide undisputed documentation that it is "proven fact."

To the non-trolls, I apologize for yelling, but sometimes it just impossible not to.

Well, if you're anything like the McGees, "acting on it" only lasted for a week, if that. Just admit that you're too lazy to diet and exercise and we'll both be happy.

Anonymous said...

I am not going to participate in this argument, except to point out that a troll isn't merely someone who doesn't agree with you, or the consensus, on a given forum.

P.S. McGees, please, submit a tape if you want to go. You're much funnier/smarter than any other women I've seen on the show.
Actually... that might work against you. Just make sure you show them that you can cry often, and make sure you use the words inspiration and journey often.

Well, it's probably safe to say that no working physicist would actually dispute it. You can't produce weight (energy) from nowhere. If you are doubting it, you are probably part of the same crowd that believes the universe is 6000 years old and the Grand Canyon was produced in a few thousand years, and nothing we say will convince you otherwise. But even more sadly, you have a profound misunderstaning of WHY it is difficult to lose weight - physics and psychology are two very different animals..

No Marla, I tried it for about 25 years before I finally decided that it wasn't worth it. So sorry that I can't make you happy.

Putting aside the utterly boring and inane debate between malicious and unenlightening trolls and the chronically self-deluded...

I also was blown away by the TBL finale. The physical and (in some cases) emotional transformations are miraculous. And while I thought that a couple of the men might have dipped a bit low for the final weigh-in, most did not and I would guess that they will fill out a bit in the months ahead. I can't remember all of the stories, but did it seem like the most successful contestants were those who had not been fat their entire lives, but who had blown up recently?

Anonymous said...

Matt (Season 2 Winner) has an interview somewhere that kind of talks about this. He says casting for the show it 100% luck. They're not looking for just cool, good looking fat people, they have a "cast" they want to fill out. The spunky single girl who wants to lose it to find a man (Susie and Kai) the devoted father who wants to be there to watch his girls walk down the aisle (Eric and...what's his name from last year) the former athelete who wants to regain his glory days (Adrian maybe, Brian, and Matt from last season.)

Matt said everyone was asking him how to get on the show, but that the biggest mistake they made was not starting a fitness program on their own when they didn't make it. People he said who started out trying out for season one, and are still trying to get to season 4. He mentioned that if they had just done it on their own they would have lost the weight 2 years ago.

If you want to lose the weight badly enough to contemplate leaving family and friends for months and being shown on national television--use that drive to work on it at home.

The at homers proved that you don't have to be on the ranch to get results. (Poppi looks amazing!)

____________

There is some truth to the statement above from anon. 10:08. Let's see one year from now how many have kept the weight off. I'm willing to bet it won't be many. Not everyone can keep up the unrealistic and exhausting pace of the show once they get back into the real world.

Anonymous said...

I love how they show the fat girls in sports bras and spandex shorts in the beginning because I think they're so friggin' sexy! That's the only way to see fatgirls on TV. Now, from another point of view, how else would you show America how fat these people are? You can't show them that if they're covered from head to toe in baggy sweats and sweatshirts.

Anonymous said...

I watched the show every week and also enjoyed it alot! I was wondering though if anyone knows exactly how long the season actually was? It was only on tv for a few months and the top 4 were on their own at home for 2 months (I thought) but the one lady showed up 5 months pregnant! Now did she get prego before the show started or when they were at home waiting for the finale? And Erik lost like 216lbs !! I don't care how much you work out it is going to take longer then 6 months to loose that much weight!?

So my question is .... does anyone know exactly when the season started?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for that Allison - that's the point I was making above. If the McGees (or anyone else for that matter) REALLY want to lose weight, they already would have started doing so, rather than waiting for the false environment of a show that very few people get the chance to be on.

My one concern if you did make it on the show: you wouldn't be the Fatty McBloggers by the end of it, and I would miss you.

Annieann--They were at the ranch for 12 weeks, then they were on their own for 5 months. At the bottom of one of the before pictures it said "8 months ago" and they stated acouple of times that the final people were at home doing it themselves for 5 months. So I'm thinking the show started sometime in April?? That would be 8 months ago.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, but Erik is yucky looking. He's one of those people that discover thinness does not make someone more attractive. He's as ugly as ever. And Kai? Her stupid little outbreak at the end "Boo hoo, I'm soooo tired!!!" Whatever. She's tired from parting too much, not because she went home to a child and a husband and a house to take care of on top of trying to fit work outs and eating healthy. Grow up Kai, you dumb ass! So you had to give up drinking? Who cares? You're ugly too!

I would like to point out that there is a big difference between wanting to lose weight, and wanting to be thin.

I don't know anybody who wouldn't like to wake up thin, not having had to work for it, and not having to worry about gaining weight for the rest of their lives.

The truth is, for those of us who weren't blessed with the metabolism of a racehorse and aren't naturally inclined to enjoy healthy foods and exercise, it takes a lot more work to LOSE WEIGHT than just to BE THIN.

I have had to change my entire lifestyle in order to get thin -- worth it? For me -- yes, definitely. But I don't expect everybody else to have the same opinions, priorities, judgments, or interests as me. It's not just about eating less and moving more -- it's about conscious choices made every single minute of the day. It's not easy. I CHOSE to qiut smoking. I CHOSE to exercise and eat healthy. And it wasn't a conscious choice, but the effect of this was that many of my relationships, friendships and entire sense of identity changed.

So when you say "if the McGee girls want to lose weight, why do they talk about not wanting to do anything about their weight?"

Big difference.

That's a lot to think about.

Anonymous said...

Totally agree with your post, Jessifer. There's a big difference between wanting to lose weight and taking the next step of actually doing something about it. But I do get frustrated and bored when people go on and on about wanting to lose weight, but never take the next step.

Anonymous said...

I really think the McGees need to hire a trainer, from reading their blog. I mean, beg, borrow or steal, but hire a well-trained female trainer for 3 times a week, and just go to the sessions. Don't diet. Don't do anything else.

Re Biggest Loser, I thought of the McGees when the cute Jewish girl Poppi came out. That was mindblowing. She went from remarkably unattractive -- like, really ugly -- to extremely cute. It must be really strange for her. I mean, that fat blond girl Amy, or Kai, kind of had a look like they were "pretty but fat" when fat. But Poppi was butt ugly, and when she lost weight she looked really beautiful, like a little bit like a prettier version of Sarah Jessica.

Am I the only one who thought that Kai seemed to have gone INSANE before the taping? She didn't hug Caroline Rea, and was flipping out on stage.

Did yall know Marty left his wife, quit his teaching job, and is now dating Amy the blond? it was in national enquirer.

Anonymous said...

Did you know the scale at the weigh-ins isn't real either, per this link? They weigh them before hand on doc's scale, although they learn about the weight at the "weigh in." I always thought it was strange that they were dancing and carrying on up there, instead of remaining motionless.

anon 9:24 - I also thought that Kai had lost her mind, she was acting so weird ? She kept sticking her tongue out and holding her hand up like "rock on" ?? She went weird ?? You would think someone on national tv would act a little more serious?

That is exactly the point I was making upthread.

you two are always going to be fat. the rich jewish doctor fantasy ain't gonna happen, either.

I've never put it quite that bluntly, but yeah. That too.

Anonymous said...

I see a pattern here. First the McGees hope that the act of marrying will somehow make them thin, then they hope that their loyal readers will spirit them onto TBL, with absolutely no effort on their part.

Guess what Fatties? No-one on the face of the Earth can lose weight for you. You - and you alone - are the only person who controls what you put in your mouth. Wanting to lose weight ain't enough - you have to actually DO SOMETHING. Like putting the fork down and getting your ass on a treadmill.

But somehow, like BFB said, I don't think that's ever going to happen.

Buttercup Rocks said...

Crimminy, how gullible are you, 2.38, 2.49 and 3.19? Do you seriously think that anybody from BFB would berate fat people for being too lazy to get embroiled in some lowest common denominator reality-TV show about weight loss? Get a clue.

Can't a girl dream?

Anonymous said...

Eh, BFB is lame anyway.

Personally, I love you, McGees, and would love you whether you go on the TV or not, or lose weight or not. I love that you're utterly unsanctimonious about nearly everything, and what you're sanctimonious about, I am, too.

I refuse to punish you for your honesty. In fact, your honesty is another reason I love you so much. I totally understand the ambivalence of something like Biggest Loser, and I would need a slew of people to support me to go on the show, too. Likewise, I totally understand the ambivalence of actually, for real, going for it and losing weight on one's own, though everyone's ambivalence is, of course, their own.

There is a huge gap between knowing what to do, "wanting" to do it, and actually wanting-then-doing it. The best analogy I've seen so far is that telling anyone overweight to "Just eat less, exercise more" is like telling a smoker "Just stop smoking" or an alcoholic "Just stop drinking." All of these conditions are personal choices which, if only for health and financial reasons, most people want to change. With a lot of mitigating circumstances, yes--I know the FA folks will do the "Genes! Metabolism! PCOS!" thing, and I do think those have far greater effects than the trolls will allow. Ultimately, though, I also think that we can always make choices in our lives to change our weight, our smoking, our drinking, it just depends on how much we have to change, and how willing we are to change that much. Sometimes we're not, for whatever reason (including the popular accusation "lazy"), but I think most of the time we're not yet.

The thing is though, I can tell you from personal experience that one of the exact things that keeps a "not yet" from becoming a "now" is nagging. Like the trolls say, if the McGees really wanted to lose weight, they would. I say, if the trolls really wanted the McGees, or anyone for that matter, to lose weight, they would shut up.

That's all I've got.

Anonymous said...

Eh, all right, I'm baited.

Your interpretation of my words is wrong and not logical from the content. I give the ultimate source of anyone losing weight as personal choice.

You taking my statement as me blaming you for anyone's fatness was a personal choice as well. Why was that your choice?

I admit, it seems that, from your past posts, you choose to focus only on the most polarizing portions of anyone's comments. I may have made a mistake in tone and bluntness by using the phrase "shut up," or the word "nagging," and, I now realize, baited you and your cohorts.

And while I graciously accept your apology, this is what dictionary.com has to say about "nag" and "nagging," respectively:
"to annoy by persistent faultfinding, complaints, or demands"
"to find fault or complain in an irritating, wearisome, or relentless manner"
Again, I fear this will bait you and your compatriots, but it seems to be fitting.

So, now that that's in order, I would like to edit my statement:

I can tell you from personal experience (which includes my own reactions, working with adolescents, and perusing research published by the American Psychological Association) that one of the many factors that prevent people from changing already present bad habits and/or addictions, such as smoking, nailbiting, drinking or overeating, is persistent, exclusively negative reinforcement. Persistent negative reinforcement alienates the people with the behavior and ingrains the behavior even more deeply. This is a common sense and oft-proven psychological reality with which nearly all humans are familiar. If trolls really wanted anyone to change anyone's habits, they would not use persistent negative reinforcement, and, assuming they're human, they know this already.

You might try to take apart "persistent negative reinforcement." You can see an easy definition for that under "nagging." Especially note the words "to annoy," "persistent," and "relentless" in the above definitions. It's very clear that, whether you call it "nagging" or "persistent negative reinforcement," the definition of what is negative comes from the receiving end. I'm sure it's clear to you from the reactions on this blog that your comments are perceived as negative.

So. You choose to persistently negatively attempt to enforce against a certain pre-existent behavior (or, with exercise, persistently negatively advocate for a new behavior), which, in actuality, only helps to ingrain that pre-existent behavior. Not only are you fighting a losing battle, but you're aiding a positive feedback loop.

I'm very curious--Why do you choose to do that?

But you must admit, BFB does provide great entertainment value. All those fatties railing about how diets are the devil - it's hysterical!

Anonymous said...

I have no problem with fat acceptance, really. But when they only agree with studies that support THEIR beliefs, and accuse every other study of a)being funded by diet companies, b)being misinterpreted by biased doctors, c)not having a large enough sample size, you know something is wrong.

Sure a lot of studies that say being overweight is awful are bullshit. But to seriously try to espouse the belief that there is NO correlation and NO negative effects of being grossly overweight is just stupidity.

It will never be accepted by mainstream society because it is wrong. Let's leave out diabetes and cancer because they'll never agree the risks for these increase as you get fatter. But things like sleep apnea, joint problems, and an increased strain on your heart have been proven risks of obesity.

I'm not going to assume there's a huge conspiracy from the medical community just because some pathetic middle aged women decide they want to be considered as sexy as people who don't have pannuses.

Paul - why did you put "overweight" in quotes? Don't you recognise that some people ARE overweight? Or does using that term imply that people have an "ideal" weight range, and so you refuse to accept the concept? I guess that's another anti-fat conspiracy on the part of the medical establishment?

I put the term overweight in quotes because who gets to decide who is "overweight" and who is of a normal weight? A bigoted, fat-hating diet industry.

Even though I don't have a medical degree, I don't believe you need to have one to have a complete understanding of the human body. Sure, doctors may spend 4 years in medical school and at least 3 in a residency, but they are also so blinded by fat hatred that whatever they say about obesity isn't backed up by their knowledge, but by their biases.

So you don't have any "credentials", but you're a Ph. D. in "knowledge of the body". Hmmm, sounds familiar.

I am a medical researcher who has studied obesity for over a decade, and know from experience that medical research is a field where ethics are strictly enforced.

It seems that people are have formed opinions and then looked for facts they can twist to back them up. If you truly care enough about this, take the time to actually read the complete studies that you malign, instead of editorialized summaries, and make sure they are from a reputable medical journal.

Even if you ignore obesity as a contributing factor to other diseases, obesity greatly increases mortality rates if you have any surgery. This is not because the "fat hating" doctors care any less about obese patients. Fat is slippery, fat does not heal as quickly as other tissue, obese patients require deeper incisions to get to any internal organs. Surgeons are hesitant to cut into an obese patient, knowing that their instruments will get increasingly slippery due to the fat and the amount of cutting that is required. Surgery that could increase quality of life is not offered as often to obese patients because of these factors and others that increase mortality rates.

Obesity is both a social and medical issue, but please do not allow your feelings on the social issues to obscure your ability to make informed medical decisions about your own body.

Excellent post Lynn - it's great to have someone here who actually knows what they're talking about. [Applauds wildly]

I don't care what you say. I have read enough books and online sources to be able to come to the conclusion that being fat has nothing to do with health.
I am fat and healthy, and so are a lot of people I know. Besides, thin people can be unhealthy, too! That means that being "overweight" has no effect on a higher risk for many diseases. It is also unclear whether fat is a symptom of many diseases, or the cause of them.

But how do you know that those books and online sources aren't as biased as the studies "funded by diet industries" and the doctors who are "blinded by fat hatred"?

Besides, thin people can be unhealthy, too! That means that being "overweight" has no effect on a higher risk for many diseases.

That's a false argument. The fact that thin people can be unhealthy does not automatically invalidate medical research which indicates that the overweight and obese ARE at a higher risk.

You're playing a dangerous game, Paul. People listen to you, yet you have no credibilty whatsover. Saying something over and over does not make it true. You're the blind leading the blind.

Yawn, Paul.

Buttercup Rocks said...

Actually, Sharon, I'm not quite as rigid in my beliefs as Paul, though I do believe that if someone eats well and lives an active life they will probably be fit and healthy whether they are fat or not. In common with Paul, I also favour the simple descriptor “fat” over the euphemistic “overweight” and the quasi-medical “obese”. (My dictionary defines the latter as “grossly fat or overweight”. Regardless of how much of a health risk a health professional may consider this to be, in itself it is neither a medical term nor a disease, though it could, as Paul points out, be indicative of one). Both words are highly subjective and frequently used pejoratively.

I do actually believe that fat can contribute to or aggravate certain medical conditions. What I don't believe is that those conditions are necessarily – or automatically – a given, or that they are exclusively confined to fat people. I believe that is one of the areas in which genetics come into play; for instance, if certain illnesses are strongly prevalent on either or both sides of a family or where and how an individual might store fat – this, incidentally, includes the outwardly slim body type that stores large deposits of fat around vital organs. However I also believe that health is a complex issue that has as much to do with what goes on between one’s ears as in the rest of the body. Fat, as you point out, is a social issue and I’m sure you will agree that being hectored, vilified, demonised and ridiculed by society at large is likely to have a detrimental effect on overall health. It’s also my personal experience that dieting severely affected my mental health and that choosing not to actively pursue weight loss has benefited my overall health. I cannot and do not make this claim for everybody.

Lastly, in accusing Paul of irresponsibility you also insult my intelligence. BFB is a diverse community including, among others, a fair quota of doctors, nutritionists, scientists and statisticians – and I can assure you that even us lesser mortals are quite capable of thinking, reading, disseminating and discussing a wide variety of information in an intelligent fashion. Debate is frequent and lively and I suspect the only reason it comes in for so much criticism is because trolls can’t shoot their mouths off on the forums.

doctors, nutritionists, scientists and statisticians

Really? I have yet to see any such posting on BFB. I'm sure there are probably some members who have a degree in some hard science, but medical doctors? Someone with a degree in nutrition? Even a statistician?

Most of the "debunking" the BFBers engage in is extremely spurious, setting up straw men or false comparisons. One favorite seems to be the binary choice between being fat and being anorexic (e.g. "Studies showing that obesity is unhealthy are obviously wrong because thin people can be unhealthy too and anorexia and bulemia dangerous!") I have yet to see a rigorous approach taken to try to prove their self-serving points. There are some other blogs that do this quite well (such as Junk Food Science), but for the most part, the logic and honesty displayed on BFB is not impressive. Like creationists, they have their comforting belief which they will bend or ignore any scientific evidence to adhere to.

I can't believe Paul actually used the cigarettes-don't-cause-cancer argument. It's true this is not "proven," inasmuch as no scientific theory is ever "proven." (That's why they are called theories.) We have not, and cannot, prove evolution, gravity, or electromagnetism. We do however have working models that fit observable data far better than any alternatives. The same is true with the theory that being fat causes health problems.

No, not every fat person gets diabetes or cancer or sleep apnea or heart disease. Yes, there are certain health benefits to being overweight as opposed to severely underweight (you'll notice the BFBers always omit that part -- they trumpet any study that shows that being fat is better than being thin, and ignore the fact that these studies generally show that it's better to be fat (i.e., overnourished) than emaciated (i.e., undernourished). No big surprise. It's that binary choice again -- "The only alternative to being fat is starving yourself until you're underweight."

Dieting may be bad for your mental health, Buffpuff, but given the issues you display often on this and other boards, it's clear that being fat isn't making you much happier.

FYI, krispy_kreme and bigfatimposter.com, I've just submitted a detailed synopsis to the publisher who approached me, (yes - that's right - they approached me on account of my specialist knowledge and experience), to write a 30,000 word, non-fiction book. I had a meeting with the editor last month and she seemed confident it will be proceeding to contract and shortly at that. I'm rather hoping my first full-length foray into non-fic might lead to my fiction finding a publisher too, since that's ultimately what I'd like to be doing. Buffpuff-

I completely agree that overall health is greatly affected by mental health. And you could quite possibly be right, that the mental part of dieting for you was so great that it outweighed any possible physical health benefits.

I do know, however, that most causes of obesity have more to do with nurture than nature. I dislike people who think their slimness is a moral, physical, or mental triumph. For most of people, weight is a product of the views they value in society, their upbringing, and where they live (to name a few of the obvious ones). It is seldom a conscious choice, and definitely not an indication of character.

I know about obesity both intellectually, and personally, as a component of my own past. Personally, the idea that a medical issue can be co-opted by non obese people as a way to work out their own issues of identity and discrimination is abhorrent. But intellectually I know that there is no current way of knowing how big of a risk obesity will be for an individual combined with their medical history. And I worry about people taking that chance. I also know that genetics is not as powerful a force as some people think. I think for anyone, the idea that our genetic material is the determining factor for any aspect of our lives would be troubling. And except for the most extreme cases is an idea that is completely false.

I understand your dislike of the word obesity, as oddly and imprecisely as it is invoked by most people. But please don't look at a general dictionary for the meaning of words that have origins in the sciences. I'm reminded of a college professor who said when looking for the meaning of words, you should go to a source that knows what it's talking about, and that's seldom the dictionary. I'm sure as a writer you're more conscious than most of the power of words.

Congrats on the book deal, intelligent scrutiny of these issues can be nothing but helpful, especially with so much information being published that is nothing more than conjecture and shoddy journalism. Best of luck on your research and finding a publisher.

Paul - I must say that this discussion has been eye-opening for me. I would have assumed that someone of your standing in the FA community would be able to back up their arguments far better than you have.

Of course Buffpuff agrees with you - as a fat person herself, she has a vested interest in believing that being overweight doesn't affect her health. She's hardly an authority in anything - apart from being fat, that is.

I don't think that there are any doctors at BFB, but again, this isn't about medical science, which is just a cesspool of antifat bigotry. Neither Buffpuff nor I trust any doctors or anything they have to say. I am fat and healthy, and I know several people who are fat and healthy, and I know several people who are thin and healthy. This observation is repeated several times at BFB, which means that there is no link between being overweight and an increased risk for disease. I am surprised that Buffpuff would admit as much given that there is no proof.

In a recent study posted in our forusm, suggesting a trend that those who choose to be vegetarion have a higher average IQ, the BFBers responded that: a)the study was crap (no indication why, but I'm sure it's because the scientists are antifat), b)Buffpuff responded that because she has a high IQ but is a pescatarian, the results are invalid, c)Another noted another personal experience to discredit the study, d)and another cited that in Hollywood, there are a lot of thin, vegetarians who also smoke.

This is the kind of criticism we appreciate at BFB. It's not about having a medical degree or knowing how to pick apart statistics. It's about knowing how to insult the results of a study not based on its merits, but on one's personal experience.

Buffpuff knows that because she is extremely bright (and has been since a young age) and is not a vegetarian, that the results couldn't possibly true. And even though people who are richer tend to have higher IQs, and vegetarians tend to be richer in this country, none of those considerations made it into the discussion. What it boils down to is that the study is insulting fat people, and saying that they are all stupid.

I find it amazing that Paul is equating smoking and obesity as two factors that are not proven to cause disease.

If you really believe that there is no causal connection between smoking and cancer, can you expect anyone to take your opinion seriously as far as obesity goes?

I have a degree in math and can hold my own in a statistics discussion, but you are confusing what statistics is supposed to do for you. It's just a tool, not the fount of all wisdom. Statistics cannot prove that chopping the head off a rabbit will cause it to die, but I think most people can accept a causal connection there. If you do not have at least an undergraduate degree in math/engineering, please don't try using statistics as a tool of discovery. You will have about as much luck as someone off the street successfully operating an MRI machine and making a correct diagnosis from the output.

All of this is very interesting because the pro-smoking groups mirror the rhetoric of the pro-fat groups to a frightening degree:

(1) Smoking has not been proven to cause cancer since statistics cannot prove causal correlation. Obesity has not been proven to cause diabetes since statistics cannot prove causal correlation.

(2) Existence of confounders - smoking does not hurt you, it's the additives in the cigarettes. Obesity does not hurt you, it's the lack of exercise (which is intrinsically difficult for someone who is obese). Incidentally, one of my close friends has smoked "Native American" cigarettes for years in a sincere belief that they are completely healthy. She got diagnosed with emphysema in February, now she's not all that sure.

(3) Complete lack of basic logic. Non smokers get lung cancer, therefore smoking cannot cause lung cancer. Thin people get diabetes, therefore obesity cannot cause diabetes.

(4) Medical malice. Doctors are against smokers and provide a lesser standard of care. Doctors are against the obese and provide a lesser standard of care.

(5) Complete disjointedness from ANY reputable medical authority. The number of credible doctors who believe obesity does not contribute to disease is about the same number that believe a couple of packs a day won't hurt anything.

Also, Lynn is 100% accurate about surgery on the obese. I worked in a hospital for quite a few years, surgeons will not touch someone who is obese unless they have to because the surgery is fantastically difficult. Also, general anesthesia on someone who is morbidly obese is pretty much a white knuckle ride for the anesthesiologist.

And lastly, not using the term "overweight" because you can't figure out over which weight - this should only happen if you are profoundly illiterate in math. If you are four sigmas removed from the mean of the bell curve, it's pretty safe to say that you're "over" weight. Do you refuse to use the terms "tall" and "short" because you can't figure out what the correct height for someone is?

Anonymous said...

Speaking purely for myself, I'd be insulted if I were approached on on account of my "specialist knowledge and experience" of being fat.

You're making rash and unfounded assumptions. Your conclusion the book has something to do with fat is at least as likely to be wrong as right. If she was approached because of her expertise, it's more likely having to do with her profession than her body type, don't you think? (Occam's razor and all that rot, dontcha know.)

As for the use of the word "git," it's a common slang word in the UK. Surely you don't think that BuffPuff is the only resident of the entire nation who has internet access? "Wanker," is another common British slang word and descibes you lot perfectly.

But lately I haven't check it much because of the attn whores, looser trolls that are annoying and repulsive, having nothing better to do than state to online strangers what they wouldn't dare to say to strangers on the street.

I've also grown a bit tired of the fatty girls, not of them exactly, I should say, but of their obsessiveness and then their whining and their pessimism towards their goals. I don't believe in diets, I believe that fat can indeed equal healthy, I also believe that one should do with one's body what one wants. But with the fatties...yeah, it's come to a point where I've said: Enough.

And it came today, upon seeing the amount of disrespect some of their brightest fans endured - upon seeing how the McGees have allowed trolls and regular a*holes to leave their crap all over the comments section.

Shame on you McGees. Shame on you for disrespecting your readers this way, for allowing pathetic nothing-better-going-on-in-their-life trolls to poop all the place, for allowing disrespect of this nature.

Your credibility has seriously been dwindling with every whine and moan after your binges. Your credibility I think took a serious toll after you allowed pathetic posters to run away with the comments section.

Good job.

You've lost one more of your faithful readers, but are left with about 10 new trolls. Your logic and loyalty is as good as your diets.

I'm not going into the healthy/unhealthy fat flame wars. But I am curious why the Fatty McGees can't do their own video or have someone around them to help them. They're in NYC and LA (right?) and someone there would probably love to help videotape them for TBL.

I do agree that there are some foods that are addictive (whether it's physiological or psychological is another story). I mean, put cheese around me, and it's gone. And for some people, something drastic like WLS or being sent in the desert for 3 months a la TBL is what it's going to take to shake them up.

BUT even with WLS, being on TBL, or doing your own weight loss program alone (aka diets and exercise), it still comes down to handling food in some way so you don't regain it. So at some point, yuo do have to develop some guts and figure out how to cope and deal with food and exercise (or activities) to keep you healthy.

I have struggled with food all my life and it's only lately that I really truly understand that I am going to have to keep moving and do something like the gym or walking AND watch what I eat. Do I like it? No, but I have eaten whatever I liked in the past and I know the results are. Obesity. I still have another 100 pounds to lose (I've lost 80) and I don't know if I'll get there. But I know where I'm at is far better than where I was.

Some people (probably me included) are always going to be overweight by BMI or life insurance standards. But it's still better than carrying around an extra 80-100 pounds.

So if the Fatty McGees want to lose weight, they probably have people in their area who would videotape them and submit it for them. But they still have to go and still have to keep at it. It's not ever going to be "BAM! You're thin -- go and eat like you used to, my child."

If you accept that, you can start right now in taking care of yourself.

John Smith from high school? John Smith from high school? Who gives a shit about John fucking Smith from high school, or anyone else for that matter? It's your life, you're talking about! If you want to basically be put in a position where you must lose weight, and become an inspiration to others, go for it. Otherwise, stop the moaning.

30000 words is quite a short book. Will there be illustrations?

Why do some people seem to have a problem with anonymous posting? How does making up a name confer credibility?

Anonymous said...

I've also grown a bit tired of the fatty girls, not of them exactly, I should say, but of their obsessiveness and then their whining and their pessimism towards their goals [...] Your credibility has seriously been dwindling with every whine and moan after your binges.

Totally true. The McGees stymie themselves at every turn. They write:

I also want to be pushed like that. I want to have nothing to do all day except train and count calories. I would love to focus 100% of my energy into changing my life.

Sounds good.. but there's always an escape clause..

BUT it's not practical for us at the moment life and job wise. And, well, there's that whole part about being on National TV.

A while ago one of the Fatties wrote about Weight Watchers. It all sounded very promising until she added:

... EVEN IF I gain 4 lbs that week because cheeseburgers are just that good.

With that attitude, the McGees will never lose weight because they just don't want to put the effort in. But if anyone dares point that out, some do-gooder will come along and accuse them of:

choosing to persistently negatively attempt to enforce against a certain pre-existent behavior (or, with exercise, persistently negatively advocate for a new behavior), which, in actuality, only helps to ingrain that pre-existent behavior.

Why should I care if the McGees lose weight or not? They obviously don't.

It doesn't. Particularly when some idiot comes along and posts under your name.

As another_troll's before, your interpretation of my words is backwards. In your case, you illustrated the point of my post beautifully. And I'm still very, very curious about my question, especially in your case.

I'm sure you, and all you other trolls, don't care about answering my question, and therefore, don't respond. This makes a lot of sense, good job on being consistent. But all of you do respond to a whole mess of other things you claim are not worth caring about or, at the very least, incredibly below you. This doesn't make sense, and is inconsistent. You choose to spend so much time on something that you yourself claim you don't care about. If you don't care, 10:16, then why do you choose to take the time to read their blog, the time to make negative posts, the time to read do-gooder responses, and the time to reply to do-gooder responses?

I have been a silent reader of the blog for a while. And I have found it funny, sweet, and interesting. To those who are making fun of people who are larger than you or saying that they're too lazy, I have more than enough to say to you.
But I'm not even going to add to the fighting in this forum. All I'm going to say is that you girls are awesome:) Keep up the great work and don't let the trolls get you down.

Yes, Poppy, it will; loads. It's primarily a reference/textbook, and will involve a ton of research and interviews - though it won't have a dry, academic tone. The publisher's quite a hip one and anxious to avoid that kind of thing.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, buffpuff: I wish you had a more accessible blog.

Back to thread: I read the McGees because they are funny and honest and unpreachy, and sometimes I actually want to know what other people have to deal with even if I don't share the same problems. If thinking that Lindsey and Emily sometimes make life unnecessarily difficult for themselves makes me a troll, then, er, fol-de-rol.

Buttercup Rocks said...

's'easy, Poppy, just sign up for a (freeee) blogger account and my blog's your oyster. Believe me, no one on the face of the planet is more rubbish with computer-related things than me. If I can do it, a lobotomized troglodyte is capable of opening up an account.

Go on, you know you want to...

And I'm still very, very curious about my question, especially in your case.

OK, e, I'll bite. I say these things because I'm a horrible, bitter, twisted bitch and not a wonderful, loving, caring person like you.

Happy now?

2:56:

I appreciate any response, since (from what I've seen) no troll has ever answered the "why" question on this blog.

As for "happy"--I'm interested in satisfying my curiosity, which your response did not. What you said, though it may have a whiff of honesty, is more akin to how angry fatties respond to trolls than how I would expect a troll to respond to a fatty.

Sarcasm aside, if you're actually claiming to be a bitch, are you one of those people who's a bitch and proud of it? Then it would make sense to me why you're here. Horrid would make sense too, so, are you horrid and proud of it? I ask the "proud" bit because most people try to avoid being horrid bitches, though some don't and pride themselve on it.

If you're actually bitter and twisted, that would also make sense. The situation you're in right now, though, just doesn't make sense. Or, it doesn't make sense to me. I'm interested in some illumination as to why it makes sense to you.

Anonymous said...

OK, e, I'll be honest now...

The reason I posted what I did is that, having lost a lot of weight myself, I lose patience with people who say they want to lose weight, but continue to do nothing about it. I know that bitching to fatties won't help them and is ultimately futile, so I guess I'm posting out a massive sense of frustration.

I have read the archives and in some of those earlier posts the McGees express real pain at being so overweight. I want to tell them that they don't have to go through life being fat and feeling so bad about themsleves, that there is an alternative, but that THEY have to make it happen.

I'm not actually bitter and twisted, nor a bitch, but I will admit that I'm angry at myself for being so overweight for so long. So maybe I'm projecting that anger onto the McGees?

I think if people are fat and happy with themselves, that's cool, but when they constantly complain about how miserable it is to be fat but continue to binge and find excuses not to diet and exercise, I just want to shake them - or come over all Jillian Michaels on them.

So that's my story.

Anonymous said...

Hey--thanks.

Frustration and anger make sense to me, those are reasons, real, honest reasons. I don't even really disagree with the purported content of your or most trolls' posts, either--it's really just the (mostly terribly denigrating) tone and the (really insane amount of) repetition (which I'm sure would decrease if people just weren't baited) of the topic. And with that I'm talking trolls in general, not just your one or two posts.

Honestly, though, I didn't like the tone of your post, either, and while you may have only posted once or twice (it's hard to keep track with all the anonymouses), it's still the same freakin topic over and over again, admittedly because it's a reaction to the McGee's same freakin topic over and over again. I just have more understanding for the McGee's because I'm in the same boat, and while I make very, very sure never to complain about my fatness to my friends, I probably would complain in a blog (I do complain in my journal) to try to work out whatever dumb shit I'm putting in the way of changing myself. Because I am putting dumb shit in my own way, and I know it my own damn self, but part of the dumb shit is dumb shit I'm hanging on to from my mom, and my dad, and my grandma, and all these people who told me what to do and how to think and what to feel, and now I'm a goddamn fat 26 year old still putting this dumb shit from my childhood in front of me, and I don't know how else to get rid of it except for slowly whittling it down through expressing, out loud, somewhere, what it really is. And while I know a blog is public, I would hate (and do hate) to be faced with the same shit in my present as the shit that I'm hanging on to from my past, so I commend the McGees for their strength, because I probably would have culled the comments section long ago.

Erg. Probably TMI for you, sorry.

Anyway, while I can't agree with what you're doing or how you're doing it, at least, in your case, I now know where you're coming from, and it's not so bad. So, thanks.

e - you're welcome and I'm happy for you that you're working through the baggage. I wish I had done it when I was 26 and not waited until I was 46!

Anonymous said...

I think the McGees just don't want to put in the work. Losing weight isn't fun. It isn't easy. It's sometimes painful.
I recently gained 10 pounds and you know what? I'm hungry right now. But I've lost two pounds this week by cutting out food I'd rather eat and going to the gym for a little bit longer. Do I particularly want to do it? No. But I'd rather be uncomfortable for a couple weeks than berating myself for a lifetime.
It's just about facing reality, that sometimes the phrase "no pain no gain" is dead fucking serious.

Anonymous said...

I hear you, sister! I wish I'd got on top of my weight problem when it was only ten pounds. Waiting until you're 40-something to lose the weight, then looking back at your life and realising all the things you missed out on really sucks. I really feel as though I'm making up for lost time.

That whole "because cheeseburgers are just THAT good" thing is unbelievable to me. Can't you see what you're doing to your own happiness?

I mean, i struggle with weight, and cheeseburgers are just OFF the menu. Going on eating sprees involving dipping sauces and cheeseburgers is just insane to me.

It sounds to me like you girls are a little bit like alcoholics or drug addicts, but your drug of choice is food.

There is just NO reason why an educated, well-off woman in her twenties who is extremely unhappy at her current weight should be ingesting cheeseburgers. I mean, I know what it's like to eat extra calories at holidays, or after a stressful day, or get second helpings when you know you shouldn't ... but cheeseburgers? That's just self-destructive.

And here we have the entire premise of this blog: "I hate being fat! (Gulp) Wah - people are mean to fatties (Belch) I wanna lose weight (Chewing noises) No, really I do! (Guzzle)..."

And on and on, ad nauseum.

What's the difference between whining, "I'm always broke!! I wish I had money. But spending sprees at mall are just that fun" and what the mcgees whine?

What exactly are your jobs that you can't focus on a diet/exercise program? I'm a lawyer -- I could see that if you worked in a firm, that might be the case, say. But I mean, no job is worth your health.

And I find it VERY hard to believe that if each of you called up a parent and said, "I want to hire a trainer. It's $200 a week" that they would be like, "no."

Anonymous said...

5:01, $200 a week might sound cheap; but if you use this trainer every week for a year, it equals $9,600 dollars. That's not exactly inexpesive.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but what good is saving $9,600 a year if you're unhappy? If $9,600 could buy you a body that you were proud of off the rack at Macy's, I think you'd consider it a steal.

Anon @ 5.01. From what I've read, the McGees have 9.00 to 5.00 office jobs. It's not like they can't find the time to work out and prepare healthy foods, they just don't want to. Bingeing and blogging is so much more fun!

And I totally agree with "no job is worth your health." I put on masses of weight a few years ago when I was running my own business and working 90+ hours a week, week in and week out. * But somehow, I don't think the McGees are in that situation.

* As you can see from my username, I have since lost the weight.
