Dream a Big Dream for Me

This idea is verbal gold baby, but since I am not about to act on it, I am giving it out to the Fat Internet Community in the hopes that someone will read this and take action...

To point out the obvious: Women's bodies are shaped differently.
The perhaps not so obvious point: As one grows larger, the differences in shape take on a life of their own...

What do I mean by this? Sometimes, when you stumble over a certain size, different parts of you body take over and seem to grow more then the rest of you. You can have a huge belly, ass, thighs, calves, breasts, etc.

What does this have to do with my promise of verbal gold? Well, I propose that the companies that engage in making expensive fat lady clothes should cater to their clientele....

For instance, imaging a line of cute fat girl jeans where you could pick a pair with say, extra room in the belly jeans and the rest of the pants wouldn't balloon out around you. Or a pair with extra room just in the thighs.

I think it's genius, as I would but such a pair of jeans. I am sick of picking clothes that fit my belly and not the rest of me. I could dress so much cuter!

Or take my big ass titties. They're huge...so is my belly, but my tits are bigger than my belly and I end up with a little hole between button 1 and 2 pompting my friends to chant..."What's between 1 and 2 Lindsey...what's between 1 and 2"...My big tits...that's what!

Come on Lane Bryant! Get to work!!!

OK! They should also make a little extra room in the, ahh, crotch region. Some of us fatgirls got a giant pubic mound down there that can really show in certain pants.

I'd also like LONGER shirts please. I don't want my polos stopping at the top of my jeans. I have a stomach, and a butt and I'd like a little coverage.

That being said, when clothes get bigger they should get WIDER not just longer. I recently bought a college alumni sweatshirt in my size. I got it home and it's really long and the arms are huge but it doesn't fit across the stomach at all! Longer AND wider when the size goes up, I should not have to chose between one or the other.

Thanks for letting me rant, and yes your idea is excellent!

I like Old Navy because unlike other stores, the large sizes are cut larger all around. Also, I find ShopKo has clothes that are cut better in the larger sizes as well, although obviously their quality is not as good. But I hate trying on clothes that are cut for a size 8 proportions just larger, instead of adjusting for someone that is actually my size.

Personally I haven't had any problems with their stuff, and for the first time ever I actually own a dress that fits me properly and looks fab ^_^ Shame you had problems, plus the price wasn't such a big thing for me, since we were doing it with an exchange rate it was really rather good ^_^

I looooove Torrid, but it is spendy on a student budget.
I also like your jeans idea. If I were really, really, stinking rich, I would have all my jeans (all my clothes...?) custom-made.
I'd also like to take issue with the "cut the shirt down to my toes!" crew. This is patently a bad idea. In addition to the fact that I've learned to deal with the fact that people realize I am fat even if I am swathed in fabric from head to foot (burqa, perhaps?), wearing a shirt that hits me at the hips makes me look huge. HUGE. A nice crop that hits me between my natural waist and the flare of my hips gives me a pretty hourglass shape. Please: there are plenty of tent-shirts for fat ladies. Do not discourage the making of fitted clothing!

Also, I would rather talk about clothes and window-shop on the internet than do homework.

I would so love to have pants that fit my ass without leaving enough room for two in the waist! Even when I was my thinnest - I've always had this problem. Child
bearing hips!

I want to know why they like to assume that the fatter you are, the taller you are. It would be nice to have a polo shirt that didn't have sleeves that went down past my elbows and down to my knees. I know I'm short, but give me a break.

I think you may be onto something!!! I have that problem! If I buy jeans that fit my hips, they're huge on the rest of me! Must not be fat chicks who make the damn things!!!!

And maybe jeans with a special pannus pocket.

Manufacturers and retailers have to rationalize their inventory into a small number of sizes. That why fat clothes are hard to find. There's no way that there are going to be fine gradations of fat clothes available, at least at the retail level. The number of sizes that would have to be made would increase exponentially. Most of the stuff would end up in outlets. Except that the outlet business doesn't even exist anymore, as least for the old overstock/last season/seconds type of stuff: outlets are just shopping malls for new clothes now.

Jeans already come in a few varieties of slim through "more room in the hip and thigh." Beyond that is just not going to happen.

All clothes are initially made up by a samplemaker in a medium size. That's medium for the target market, so it would be big size for a plus size manufacturer. When the design is sold, a grader adjusts the pattern up and down a few steps. Then the pattern pieces are laid out for the most efficient fabric usage, taking into account the number of each size they expect to sell and the grain of the cloth. Only at that point are the clothes even made and the non-medium sizes able to be tried on. The whole process of grading is done by using rules or computer programs. Graders and the charts and programs they use don't know about anything other than up and down size modifications.

Landsend.com offers a custom pair of jeans for $62.00 in plus sizes. (I have never ordered them, so I can't comment on the end product). They also offer a custom khaki and a custom shirt.

When some one can figure out how to use the Internet to provide mass customization of clothing, they will make a fortune.

You said huge titties!!! Awesome...

On the other hand, some of us fat ladies DON'T need a little extra room in the crotch region. When I buy jeans that fit my ass, they're way too big in the waist, so I have to wear a belt. This cinches the front so that I end up with a big fold of extra fabric there that makes me look like I have a penis.

Bottom line is that we're all built differently, and no one sizing scheme will fit us all. Be prepared to try on 20 pairs of pants to find one that fits, and make friends with a good tailor.

I bought my first pair of 7 jeans last summer and love them. (I live in Europe and they don't sell them here) When I was recently in the US I decided to stock up and buy a bunch. Interestingly enough, in the same size one pair was too big, one was just right and one was too small. At around $80-90 for a pair I'm glad I didn't order them online!
