Save Jarrid!!! (No, not the Subway guy)

I am one of those creepy people who wants to own a dog that is so small that he fits comfortably in a tea cup (like the fluffball to the left). Of course, I am not really at a point on my life that owning a dog should come to fruition, so I make due by visiting websites where cute tiny dogs are featured...and then I torture my friends by sending them emails with picture attachments proclaiming that "I have officially found the cutest puppy ever"! I find the "cutest puppy ever" about twice a week.

So, I am a regular on a site called DivaPup, and it has come to my attention that there is some size discrimination going on here, and I am hoping that one of our readers might take it upon his/her self to stop the sadness. Most of the puppies featured on this site are either "tiny", "teacup". "toy", or "micro-mini", and generally the smaller they are the more money they sell for. I have already admitted that I am one of those people that want a supper tiny puppy, but it's mostly because I live in a super tiny New York City apartment, and I just don't have the room for a bigger dog.

There is a part of the website that is devoted to "special priced" dogs, and it is this page I call your attention to because there lives Jarrid (the cutey to the right). Jarrid is a puppy who has been on the site for a while, and who has been relegated to the special priced section. He is really cute and looks very sweet, but he is bigger then the other puppies, and subsequently hasn't been sold. Seriously, Jarrid has been on the website for longer then any other puppy they have.

If anyone is interested in buying a dog and lives on the East Coast (or doesn't mind paying for humane shipping), PLEASE consider taking a look at Jarrid (scroll all the way down, he's the last puppy on the special prices page) and taking him home with you. He deserves a good family...it shouldn't matter that he's bigger then his brothers and sisters, should it?

Seeing Jarrid on the site tonight almost made me cry. For reals. I get really emotional about puppies. If I had the room and the time right now I would love to own him, but I don't, so please spread the word and let's find Jarrid a home!

My boyfriend isn't a dog fan, so I can't buy Jarrid, but I think he is really cute and I want him to find a home as well!

It would be so cool if this website could really find this dog a home.

Someone please fall for Jarrid like I have and take him home with you!

I visited the site. The dogs are very cute and certainly overpriced. Jarrid is there, just where they said he would be, and he does look like he wants a home. He is also very very reasonably priced for his breed and apparent age. I does seem like he is being discriminated against because he isn't one of the overbred anorexic puppies!

I support this cause. I wish I had a Save Jarrid pin with his cute face on it.

I live in New Zealand so I don't want to ship a dog such a long way. But both dogs are very cute. Good luck.

I have a kitty who would probably try to eat Jarrid, but I would take him if I could. I'm a sucker for the ones no one wants (my cat has one eye) and I think that you all are wonderful for taking his cause to your readers. Save Jarrid!!!

I'm considering moving out of a building that doesn't allow pets just so I can take Jarrid home. Damn my Homeowners Association!!!!

This is breaking my heart. Animals make me emotional as well. SOMEONE PLEASE BUY JARRID - HE IS SO SWEET LOOKING!

the reason he hasn't been sold is because he is for SALE. if they wanted this poor dog to have a home, they could give him to many people who don't want to pay for an animal.

GO TO THE POUND. find a dog that's really in need. any dog with a photoshoot is likely not in a cage 24 hours a day.

How is that important for this post? Do you mean that just because he isn't in the pound, he doesn't deserve to have a home?
I've heard time and time again people complaining about non-pound puppies but those puppies are also alive and deserve a home as much as any other dog or cat or fish or whatever.

I don't think that's what the 'pound puppy' person was suggesting. Little dogs are hard to get through pounds, though: you're more likely to get one from a rescue organization.

The thing that bothers me about this site is that it has all the earmarks of a puppy mill -- lots of puppies of different breeds, with tons and tons of cute pictures of lots and lots of different puppies, all available right now. Breeders usually specialize in one breed, maybe two, and they don't have lots and lots of fertile females, so they never have more than a couple of litters a year.

Cute as the pictures are, you're far better finding a breeder who's interested in the health and happiness of their dogs, eh? And this usually means one or maybe two litters a year, with long waiting lists.

It also means healthy, happy, well socialized pups instead of poor pooches that have been raised like battery hens in filth.

Jarrid is an ultra cutie, though. Major heartstring tug, I gotta say.

Sites like that divapup should be illegal. And even though the puppy pictures are cute I'm sure they are not hosted very well.

People out to make this kind of profit on animals don't spend money on giving them good places to stay, health care, etc.

Animals should never be a commodity. Because I feel they would just put jarrid down as soon as he gets a little older I do hope a reader is able to get him.

I wish I could save all the dogs from these people.

Yep I agree, this site screams puppy mill. It is RIDICULOUS that they "sell" mutts for all intents and purposes like pure breads. Let me tell you a secret America, a mix between two breeds is just that, a mix, NOT a pure bred. These people should go to jail, not only for fraud but for animal cruelty.

Anonymous said...

Dani- What are you talking about? How do you know they are guilty of animal cruelty? How could you know that? And I visited the site and all the mixed breeds are advertised as just that - mixed breeds.

That being said, I hope someone buys Jarrid and givs him the love he deserves - regardless of where he comes from.

There are many, MANY complaints about this site, how they do business and from who they procure their dogs from. Divapup is a broker, and no reputible breeder is going to go through a broker. They care about the families that are going to adopt their dogs, make sure it is a right fit, etc. Not to mention she is selling MIXED BREEDS for over $1000! If you can't see the problem with this, you need to do some serious research on puppy mills. They are generally very cruel places where dogs are bred, literally to death and kept in very small cages. Seriously, I am not one to jump on a bandwagon just to stir up trouble, but sites like these, and other "brokers" such as Shakeapaw, are only making the puppy mill situation worse.

Public Service Announcement-----
Though all dogs need homes........ you should not be buying dogs from puppy mills. Doing so only supports and prolongs the puppy mill system through which many dogs are treated cruelly and inbred to the point where the dogs have serious health issues. Don't support the puppy mill system, adopt a dog from a pound, or rescue organization (where dogs in need are available right now!) or contact a reputable breeder and wait for a healthy and humanely bred dog. -------End of Announcement

Blah Blah Blah. As far as I can tell this isn't a PETA site, so get off your high horses and help get the dog a home.

I got my 3 dogs from http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=3&type=Dog
No one loves like a dog who has been rescued.

Miranda--You're an idiot. Read a newspaper. Get informed before you speak. It's people like you who keep places like the aforementioned running. "Let's forget about the cause of the problem and save the cute puppy!" Guess what...there will be another one in his place tomorrow, and the money from Jarrid's sale will go to the assholes who put him in this situation to begin with.

Anonymous said...

SG79: So, Jarrid's life isn't worth it because of the horrible place he comes from? All dogs in all bad situations should be saved...how about YOU not being an idiot.

Anonymous said...

Kate, the issue isn't that we shouldn't save dogs in bad situations. The problem is that if you purchase a dog from people who profit from their abuse, it just funds them so they can abuse MORE dogs.

Anonymous said...

Why does everyone assume these dogs are being abused? Did I miss something? For some reason "Let's forget about the cause of the problem and save the cute puppy!" doesn't bother me that much and if it bothers you, join PETA or shut up.

Jenna-
The puppy mill industry is famous for abusing animals and to buy from them is to continue to support this industry. Buying Jarrid only supports this industry, whereas adopting a dog is saving a life. Most likely Jarrid will be bought....but there are many dogs are your local pound that face death in the morning if no one adopts them. Furthermore, adopting dogs is nearly free (usually you pay a small donation to the shelter) and the dogs usually come spayed or neutered or with a free op. done by a local vet in order to prevent even more dogs from ending up unwanted and abandoned. As far as I can see Jarrid isn't as "in need" if he is up for sale at $500. And even if I wanted to buy him and support this evil system, I can't afford that kind of price tag. My cute and adorable puppy came from a pound and cost me $40, and that money went to keeping the shelter operating and saving more animals, not to sketchy puppy mill middle-men.
And, btw, you don't have to be a member of PETA to care about animals.

Let's talk about being fat.

So what? No one should get the puppy because it is from an assumed puppy mill? What happens to the puppy then?

It's a catch 22. Don't buy the puppy because then you are supporting puppy mills which hurt animals, but if you don't buy this puppy then what will happen to it? And what if this place does abuse animals, then you are helping animal abuse by not buying the puppy, right?

Your damned if you do and damned if you don't I guess.

I'll check out Jarrid and see what I can do.

Hey! Fat Girl! said...

That made me really sad, too. Poor Jarrid :(

Please don't buy any puppies from Diva Pup...this lady Elizabeth Mandarino is a broker who sells overpriced "puppymill puppies"
believe me I got hooked into it and bought a puppy from the site. What a mistake! Not that I don't love my puppy but it has cost me thousands of dollars to fix the broken pup. The puppy came with kennel cough and also had to go thru surgery for a genetic knee problem. She does not honor her guantee's and is a real witch to deal with. Sooo BEWARE THE DIVA!

I joined this thread late so maybe nobody's checking it for updates now...but can't PETA or some animal rescue charity bust these villains? Is there no equivalent of the UK Trades Description Act here? Or is it just a case of "buyer beware"? What they're doing is disgusting.

On the other hand I resented getting an earful from one of my friends the one and only time I purchased a kitten from a pet shop. It wasn't something I set out to do. All of my other cats to date have been adopted from animal shelters or, in one case, a guy who was planning to emigrate. Indeed, said kitten, now 7 years old and quite the most brilliant companion anyone could ask for, shares my home and affections with another rescue cat. But, what can I say? The little fink chose me; came to the front of the pen when I made kissy noises at him, stood on his hind legs, stuck his little ginger paws through the bars, gently took my finger tip bewteen them and nibbled it. I'm not made of stone!

One sleepless night later and I was back with £59 in my hand. And the pet shop allopwed me to take him down the road to my vet to get him checked out. He was absolutely fine.

An animal can't help where it comes from. They all need a home and they all deserve love. He might have gone to someone who ill-treated him or got bored with him after a couple of months and taken him into the vet to be put to sleep. As it was he went to me and lives the life of Riley.

Has jarrid found a home? It doesn't matter where he comes from, look at the poor little guys face. If he is in such a "horrible" place, as you all claim he is, why doesn't somebody stop bitching about it and rescue the little dude?? I live in a small apt. in Boston, so is un-doable for me, but his furry paws and scruffy little beard are breaking my heart. Any updates?

DivaPup is not a puppy mill. I know the woman who runs DivaPup- she is not a puppy mill or a dog breeder. She simply markets the puppies for numerous breeders whom she knows. I am not saying that I support the unhealthy breeding of these far-too-tiny puppies, I am just stating that DivaPup is NOT a puppy mill.
