Regurgitation

It's strange, but every so often on this blog we find the need to re-explain our viewpoint on Fat. It seems amost as if you are either pro-fat and or pro-diet, and that there isn't any room for other viewpoints. Well, we don't think that is that case. Big Fat Blog wrote about us yeasterday and we consequently have a lot more readers today, so thanks Big Fat Blog! We love new readers! So, for you new readers out there I have included below a comment I made on the Big Fat Blog site. I hope it clears up some of the confusion about our site and that many of you keep on reading...

I am writing this comment in response to Paul's comment that, "Fatty McBlog probably won't be seen by a large number of people here as totally pro-fat". Now that may be true, we probably aren't "pro-fat" in a conventional sense, but what we are are two fat girls who have varied and complex feelings about our size, and our postings reflect that. We are not always happy about being 100 lbs+ overweight. We get our feelings hurt and have shitty encounters with other members of this society, and lots of the time we wish we were not as large.

That being said, we also realize that we have no choice but to embrace our lives and live fully as fat women. So, while that might not make us "pro-fat" in some people's eyes, I have to say that what "pro-fat" means necessarily must be defined by each person individually. After all, the opposite of pro-life is not pro-death, it is pro-choice. We choose how to navigate this world as fat women, and try to write a blog that shows our truths including things that are funny, quirky, depressing, sad, banal, and confusing.

I really appreciate that viewpoint actually.

I too sometimes feel that the "pro-fat" community doesn't allow enough for diverse opinions.

Thank you and I agree.

I am totally going to start reading this blog from now on!

Keep up the funny/depressing/banal work!

I agree too! This isn't a black and white issue. There's a lot of grey area to sort through. While I am a fat woman, and I do love myself, I'm not always pleased with the way I look...and that's okay! You don't have to like 100% of your body to love yourself!

I think you are truthful, funny, and honest, so thanks, and I hope other people get what you are trying (succesfully) to do on this blog.

I am interested to hear how Paul would respond!

If you're unhappy about it, you can always direct your energy into exercising and following a proper, health and balanced diet.

It's the dismal acceptance, lack of energy to do anything constructive and positive about your despondent situation that just allows you to wallow in your self-pity.

People are assholes. The world is cruel. But you're smart, beautiful girls, and you can do something about it.

It might take months or years, but life flies. Don't let it take off w/o you.

Paul,
I was wondering how you feel about what they said regarding the different notions of the term "pro-fat" because I agree with them that the fat acceptance movement is sometimes not that accepting of a variance of opinion. Thanks for responding.

The reason I love this blog so much is that it reflects the way that I feel about being fat.

Somedays I want to rock it and go out and be a strong powerful woman who owns her size and is beautiful not because of her figure but because of the vibe she gives off. Other days I want to sit at home and cry and eat cheese. As someone before me said, this isn't a black and white issue, it's grey all over.

It's one of the few blogs about being overweight that isn't a constant calorie counting reminder that I'm not "on a mission" like most fat-bloggers, but that I'm living with being fat and so are other people.

I'm not in love with being fat, and I don't think these bloggers are either. Sometimes you are what you are and if you can't change it immediately you might as well try and own it. Sure, I'd like to be skinnier but I'm not going to waste my life killing myself to try and be someone only to find myself with a great body and no sense of self.

Keep of the great work fattymcblog!

I am very glad that Big Fat Blog linked you guys. While I respect what die-hard pro-fat folks believe, I have to admit that I am not always happy with my weight and the effects it has on my health and social life. Granted, I don't feel ashamed of myself for being fat, but I don't necessarily feel proud either. There is middle ground, and I'm glad to see you're representing!!!

I too am somewhere in the middle. One can be self-aware and self-critical without being self-loathing.

ummm, Sassafrass, I think this is a different Paul. I'm assuming Fatty McGee was referring to Paul McAleer of Big Fat Blog. I doubt he would respond in the same way as the "Paul" above.

I think you guys are funny, well written, and truthful. Don't stop writing!

I would just like to add that Big Fat Blog is a farce. Their refusal to open a free and open dialog about their views by literally exluding anyone who doesn't parrot their opinions in the site's comments section erases any credibility they may have had.

Hi kids. Paul from Big Fat Blog here - the "paul" up there in the comments is *not* me.

I stand by my opinion (backed by the authors of Fatty McBlog, mind you) that their site isn't totally pro-fat. I personally wouldn't deem this a fat acceptance blog, though it certainly is a fat blog. And I agree that there's an enormous grey area out there between being a hardline fat activist and someone who's really against the whole shebang.

I feel that BFB leans more towards the hardline-ish-ness (that's a word!) of the movement more than anything else. That doesn't mean, necessarily, that the *movement* isn't accepting of other opinions. Heck, the movement includes that giant grey area. That only speaks to BFB, and like the women behind Fatty McBlog, I'm proud of the site's stance. Neither site is for everyone, and neither should be.
